The treadle pump is a man-powered pump, designed for the irrigation of small plots of land. According to the International Development Enterprise (IDE) in Zambia, the pump increases farm income by more than $100 per year. The FAO states that irrigation can increase crop yields from 100 to 400%. This paper evaluates the contribution of the treadle pump to smallholder welfare.en
