dc.description.abstractTanzania exhibits many characteristics of a developing economy, a situation that can be improved by the development of the private sector, particularly its competitiveness. This study investigates competitiveness of the private sector in Tanzania. It also gives a review of the private sector development with a view to recommending strategic actions for improving their capacity and competitiveness. Survey of literature pointed firm characteristics to be influencing competitiveness. A combination of descriptive analysis of survey data and econometric estimation formed the methodology. The hypotheses of the study are; large firms are more competitive than smaller firms; older firms are likely to face more competition than newly established firms and High skill manager are likely to face less competition. Most firms reported competition to be serious to their business activities. Econometrics results revealed age of the firm to have a positive significant influence on the likelihood of a firm exporting and facing high competition. Skill of the manager and firm size were not statistically significant in both export and competition functions.en
