The project examined trends in active and passive smoking, and their associations with poverty, ill-health, health service use, and associated diseases in China, in order to inform future heath policies. Data analysis drew from three large, nationally representative surveys, carried out in 1993, 1998 and 2003. Among detailed findings, results show there has been a significant fall in smoking prevalence from 1993-2003. This has occurred among men and women, in rural and urban areas, and in all but the youngest age group in the survey (those aged 15-19). However, smoking prevalence remains very high among men.en
