dc.description.abstractA project on "Use of fly ash in Cement (India)" was started from 1st April, 1992 at Shriram Institute, Delhi (India) in collaboration with CANMET, Ottawa and sponsored by IDRC, Canada. In this project, three "Annual Progress Reports" for the period: (a) .1st April 1992 to 31st March, 1993 (b) 1st April, 1993 to 31st March, 1994 and (c) 1st April 1994 to 31st March, 1995 have already been submitted to the sponsor. During these periods it has been possible to produce ordinary Portland Cement meeting all the requirements specified in Indian Standard Specification No.269 using upto 14.5% fly ash in the raw mix. During the current period of operation of this project from 01.04.1995 to 30.09.1995, twenty experiments were conducted in the rotary kiln using up to 20% fly ash in the raw mix. Most of the cement plants in India are firing coal in the kiln to provide the necessary heat and the ash generated gets mixed up with the raw mix. To compensate this ash, a few experiments have also been done by mixing appropriate quantity of coal in the raw mix. The batches were evaluated chemically, by X-Ray Diffraction and optical microscopic technique. The mechanical properties viz compressive strength at 3 days, 7 days & 28 days curing, Blain fineness, setting time, autoclave expansion test etc. were evaluated. It has been possible to prepare portland cement meeting all the specifications of Indian Standard No. 269 upto 18% fly ash in the raw mix.en
