dc.description.abstract | Researchers often lack the tools, skills and concepts needed to inquire into complex settings involving multiple stakeholders and knowledge systems. The Social Analysis Systems (SAS2) project addressed this issue by developing a practical and theoretically-informed approach to people- and evidence-based action research. The tools and skillful means of SAS2 bring scientific rigor and conceptual clarity to participatory action research, engaging marginalized stakeholders in the process of inquiry, planning and decision-making. Over the life of the project more than 150 studies on topics ranging from land tenure conflicts to the management of fisheries were undertaken. A major book was published in three languages (English, Spanish, French) along with an edited volume of case studies and local language editions (Nepali, Marathi, Spanish) of key concepts and tools. Some 20 undergraduate theses, a masters thesis and a Phd Dissertation were also completed in direct cooperation with project partners. Over 180 training events of various sizes and durations were conducted, leaving in place independent training capacities in all IDRC-funded partner institutions. A broader community of practice has emerged, committed to working together towards a new model for the creation and mobilization of knowledge for development. | en |
