The IDRC Acacia initiative allows Africa-based geographic information system (GIS) practitioners and related workers to come together in a series of workshops to discuss sharing this important spatial information. An overview of the current state of free and open source software (FOSS) was presented. The second part of the FOSS workshop introduced participants to the IDRC Acacia web-mapping application. This application is an Open Source project using many of the major FOSS GIS projects presented in the theoretical section of the workshop.en
