A survey of 80 African journals was undertaken to establish the current state of journal publishing in an editorial, economic, technical, and institutional sense, and provide a baseline with which to assess changes in the coming years. Standard research principles in developing countries need to use a modified approach, taking into account conditions on the ground, such as social, cultural and linguistic boundaries. The project investigates publishing practices among scholarly journals in Africa, while exploring the potential for the utilization of online publishing systems, including systems of support, tools, and training that will strengthen a sustainable journal publishing culture among African universities.en
