Qualitative studies are essential to provide insight into the perspectives of cookstove users and to inform research and development of technologies that are both effective in reducing the hours spent on unpaid activities by women. Thus, the analysis of the effect of women's perception of improved cooking stoves in relation to domestic and remunerated activities in rural Benin was the subject of this research. The effect of perception (favorable, unfavorable) of improved cookstoves on use of traditional cookstoves is estimated using a probit regression applied to a sample of 531 women randomly selected in five communes of Benin, namely: Adjarra, Avrankou and Dangbo located in the department of Ouémé; Ifangni and Sakété located in the department of Plateau. At the end of analysis of results, as declared favorable perception, there is the saving of time for cooking food (51.5%) and the saving of time for the collection of fuel (49%) with use of improved stoves. The estimated results showed that the index of unfavorable perception of improved cookstoves has a positive effect on use of traditional cookstoves. On the other hand, the index of favorable perception relating to improved cookstoves has a negative effect on use of traditional cookstoves. Our results emphasize the importance of the implementation of policies by public decision-makers to increase the favorable perception of users of improved cookstoves.Item Pathways to unlocking green jobs in South Africa(2023) Amis, Mao; Lugogo, Sonwabile; African Centre for a Green EconomySouth Africa is facing an unprecedented unemployment crisis where it’s estimated that almost 60% of the country’s youth are unemployed. This high level of unemployment is a ticking time bomb as it is unsustainable and will deepen the high levels of inequality which are already very prevalent. The need to create more decent jobs is not only a necessity, but also extremely urgent. The transition to a low carbon economy holds enormous opportunity if it’s well harnessed to create decent jobs. Even though the anticipated job losses in the coal sector could be a major drawback in the short term, opportunities for job creation could be created in other related green sectors. However, this would require the prioritization of reskilling interventions and accelerated investments in the local economy in order to diversify.Item Investir dans des services de garde d’enfants de proximité pour réduire le chômage et le sous-emploi des femmes(2023-07) Acclassato Houensou, Denis; Coulybaly, Nisan Armand; Sall, Mame Cheikh Anta; Badji, Adama; Hekponhoue, Sylvain; Senou, Modeste Melain; Ifecro, MarcelItem Adapter les services de garde d’enfants aux besoins de la classe moyenne féminine en Afrique de l’Ouest : cas du Bénin, du Burkina Faso, de la Côte d’Ivoire et du Sénégal(2023-07) Kouadio Kouakou, Clément; Enouga, Mathilde; Thiaw, Moussa; Kengne, JosianeItem Libérer le potentiel socioéconomique des femmes pour faciliter leur entrée dans la classe moyenne(2023-07) Mendy, Pierre; Cisse, Amy; Traore, Awa; Dalle, Catherine Gladys; Dieng, Mame AdioumaItem Les politiques d’investissements centrées sur les secteurs profemmes favorisent un grossissement la classe moyenne féminine(2023-07) Cabral, François Joseph; Lawson Sipoaka, Assion; Coly, Samuel Maxime; Diop Wade, Waoundé; Kengne, JosianeItem Mesure de la classe moyenne : la nécessité d’aller au-delà de l’approche monétaire(2023-07) Ky, Yaya; Cabral, François Joseph; Malou, Jean Rodrigue; Mamno Wafo, Viviane LaureItem Mesure de la classe moyenne féminine au Bénin, au Burkina Faso, en Côte d’Ivoire et au Sénégal : une approche monétaire(2023-07) Ndiaye, Babacar; Cabral, François Joseph; Malou, Jean Rodrigue; Mamno Wafo, Viviane Laure; Ky, YayaItem Impact de la COVID-19 au Sénégal : un état des lieux(2020-12) Ahoure, AlbanItem Supporting resilience of vulnerable youth in urban Côte d’Ivoire amidst the COVID-19 pandemic : evidence from a randomized control trial(2023-10) Kimou, Assi J.C; Ahoure, Alban; Becho, Isabelle; Djebbari, Habiba; Gabehi, SergeIn the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, state responses have included reactivating protective systems to mitigate the vulnerability of the poor. While the evidence for these systems in normal times is well established in the literature, there is paucity of evidence on their effects on households during the pandemic. This paper explores the impact of an improved post-COVID-19 adaptation and recovery scheme on marginalized youth. Specifically, we test whether the combination of cash transfers, business literacy, and soft skills (a replication of government intervention) leads to increased mitigation of the adverse effect the health shock and reshapes resilience. We use a randomized controlled trial of 265 at-risk youth, in which 130 are randomly assigned to the above-mentioned treatment and 135 others are in the control group. Our results suggest that a combination of business training for youth and unconditional cash transfers may increase the chances of adapting to unexpected situations. We found that food consumption increased by 38.6 percentage points and non-food expenditures by 38.9 percentage points. The program also improved the likelihood of being able to run a microbusiness by 18.5 percentage points. Further results show that the program can lead to a reduction in misperceptions about COVID-19. These results call for an integrated approach to address resilience of marginalized groups during an exogenous shock.
