Abstract
The National Civil Status Registration Office/ Bureau National de l’État Civil (BUNEC) is the agency responsible for civil registration in Cameroon, part of the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development (Ministère de la Décentralisation et du Développement Local). BUNEC plays a central role in the institutional arrangements and the facilitation of the civil registration system. However, coordination between sectors and services is currently ineffective as each actor assumes its responsibilities for the registration of vital events in silos, without any institutionalized monitoring system. Multiple needs include revision of the legal framework and improvement of the availability of the civil registration system.
