Abstract

In Guatemala, the civil registration agency is the National Registry of Persons (Registro Nacional de las Personas – RENAP). RENAP is by law, responsible for the registration of births, marriages, divorces, deaths, and other events or acts that may alter individuals’ civil status and civil capacity. It is also responsible for providing people with identification in the form of national identity cards. RENAP also has coordination and information-sharing agreements with El Salvador and Honduras, with which Guatemala shares borders. The main resource for the National Statistics Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas – INE) is RENAP. This brief includes the RENAP Institutional Strategic Plan (2018-2022).
