Abstract
This briefing report presents: Background information on the country including legislative framework; Selected indicators relevant for CRVS improvement processes; Stakeholders’ activities; and Resources available to strengthen CRVS systems in South Africa. Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has the legal mandate to collect, compile, analyze, publish, disseminate, and coordinate the national statistics system. The Health and Vital Statistics division compiles statistical reports based on data from the civil registration system, including causes of death. The Demography division compiles vital statistics from other sources. The system is well coordinated.
