Abstract
This policy brief underlines the necessity of the vital events notification system in Mozambique. The outbreak of COVID-19 resulted in a 31 percent drop in total numbers of legal registrations of births between March and July 2020, compared with the same period in 2019. Nevertheless, the number of registrations in 2020 was three times higher than those completed in 2017 before the digitized system became operational. Health practitioners did not begin coding the cause of death for COVID-19 immediately, and only after receiving instruction from the World Health Organization.
