Improving quality of care, improving access to health services, and a brief review of performance-based financing are the focus of this two-page newsletter. Links are provided to research reports and articles. Charging user fees has been linked to financial barriers on women’s access to health services. Terrorist activities in West Africa are expected to have negative effects on maternal health in the region. The West African Health Organization has developed an evidence-based policy guidance tool to support policy makers.
