Abstract:
The paper is a synthesis of research undertaken by recipients of the African Climate Change Fellowship Program (ACCFP) fellowship awards. The papers focus on: Lake Chad, a transboundary water resource; the Cameroon coastline and socio-economic impacts of sea level rise; the Kenya coastline and mangrove ecosystems; Senegal experiments in soil fertility; Togo energy sector and forest resources and; Zimbabwe land use change and environmental degradation. A major challenge for Africa is lack of continuous, systemic data on ecosystems. The few vulnerability assessments point to the need for ecosystems protection, reforestation with “climate-smart adaptations,” integrated land-use and development planning, as well as activities to improve resource use technology.
