Abstract
This study examines the historical and contemporary aspects of cross-border insecurity in the Karamoja borderlands through the relations between the Turkana and their neighbors in Uganda, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. It proposes that this insecurity is due to decades of conflicts over resources essential for pastoralist and agro-pastoralist economies. Specific focus is also given to the socio-economic impact of insecurity on Turkana women and the broader socio-economic structures of the households to which they are linked. As well, years of peace-building initiatives in the region are examined.
