Final evaluation : knowledge for democracy in Myanmar
    (2022-11) Naughton, Emma; Minn, Kyi
The needs of research systems in fragile contexts like Myanmar are particular and varied, requiring relevant, appropriate, and innovative forms of support that contribute to the system overall and do not adversely affect its development. Through its provision of capacity-strengthening support and mentorship to Myanmar individual researchers, universities, think tanks, networks, and certain state actors, K4DM substantively improved the enabling environment for research on gender, democratization, decentralization, environmentalism, and inclusive growth in a very challenging context.

Antimicrobial activity of chemically and biologically treated chitosan prepared from black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) pupal shell waste
(MDPI, 2021-11-23) Lagat, Mevin Kiprotich; Were, Samuel; Ndwigah, Francis; Kemboi, Violah Jepkogei; Kipkoech, Carolyne; Tanga, Chrysantus Mbi; Ciani, Maurizio
This study presents the first comparative analysis of chemical and biological extraction of chitin and chitosan from black soldier fly (BSF) pupal exuviae. The antibacterial activity of chitosan was also evaluated. Chemical and biological extraction gave a chitin yield of 10.18% and 11.85%, respectively. Biological extraction gives high yields as compared to chemical extraction and can be used as an alternative method since it is inexpensive and eco‐friendly. A maximum chitosan yield of 6.58% was achieved via chemical treatment. The findings demonstrate that chitosan from BSF pupal exuviae could become a novel therapeutic agent for drug development against resistant strains of bacteria.

Snapshot of civil registration and vital statistics systems of Liberia
(Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems, 2019) Zewoldi, Yacob
The report provides a brief introduction to the civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems in Liberia. The information was collected through a questionnaire completed by the Ministry of Health in January 2019 and supplemented by a desk review of available documents. According to the Vital and Health Statistics Department of the Ministry of Health, about 546,000 or 75 per cent of births (2018) were not registered in Liberia. The civil registration and vital statistics systems in Liberia are not integrated among themselves or with other sectors.

Snapshot of civil registration and vital statistics systems of Madagascar
(Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems, 2021) Harbitz, Mia
Madagascar has a decentralized civil registration system, with no central depository of records. A key element of new legislation is the creation of a National Civil Registration and Identification Center. The responsibility for civil registration in Madagascar is divided between the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice. Registration tasks are generally carried out by the municipalities [communes]. Upon the planned modernization of the civil registration system, Madagascar will create a database for civil register records once the format of the unique identification number (UIN) has been determined.

Women’s economic empowerment : insights from Africa and South Asia
(Routledge, 2021-03-05) Kate Grantham; Gillian Dowie; Arjan de Haan
This book examines women’s economic empowerment in a range of developing country contexts, investigating the societal structures and norms which keep women from achieving economic equality. Despite global progress in closing gender gaps in education and health, women’s economic empowerment has lagged behind, with little evidence that economic growth promotes gender equality. IDRC’s Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) programme was set up to provide policy lessons, insights, and concrete solutions that could lead to advances in gender equality, particularly on the role of institutions and macroeconomic growth, barriers to labour market access for women, and the impact of women’s care responsibilities. This book showcases rigorous and multidisciplinary research emerging from this ground-breaking program, covering topics such as school-to-work transition, child marriage, unpaid domestic work and childcare, labour market segregation, and the power of social and cultural norms that prevent women from fully participating in better paid sectors of the economy. With a range of rich case studies from Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nepal, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Uganda, this book is perfect for students, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working on women’s economic empowerment and gender equality in the Global South. The editors Kate Grantham is an international development researcher, educator, and consultant focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment issues. Gillian Dowie is a senior program officer in the Sustainable Inclusive Economies program at IDRC, currently based in New Delhi, India. Arjan de Haan is a senior program specialist with IDRC’s Sustainable Inclusive Economies program.

Women’s economic empowerment in East Africa: an analysis of the literature and data
    (2020-12) Euromonitor International
Strengthening women’s economic empowerment (WEE) in East Africa is critical for national economic growth, human rights, and progress toward the globally adopted Sustainable Development Goals. To gain deeper insights into WEE and understand the gaps in evidence, Euromonitor International explored existing literature and data on the causes and impacts of employment segregation in five countries of East Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. It also examined the role of unpaid care work as a barrier to WEE, and the potential for women’s collectives to expand their opportunities.

Relationship between marketing to children on food labeling and critical nutrient content in processed and ultra-processed products sold in supermarkets in Lima, Peru
    (MDPI, 2020-11-28) Torres-Schiaffino, Daniella; Saavedra-Garcia, Lorena
New regulatory policies for the use of food labelling should be used to improve children’s health at the population level. The study provides information about marketing to kids (M2K) found in labeling of processed and ultra-processed food products sold in a supermarket chain (in Lima, Peru) and to determine how labeling relates to critical nutrient content. Children choose their favourite product based on packaging, specifically on colors and drawings which influence their perception of which product is “healthiest.” The study contributes to evidence-based decision making in policy processes.

Trans fat labeling information on Brazilian packaged foods
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2019-09-06) Ricardo, Camila Zancheta; Peroseni, Isabela Mateus; Mais, Laís Amaral; Martins, Ana Paula Bortoletto; Duran, Ana Clara; North Carolina TraCS Institute
Current Brazilian legislation is not sufficient to inform consumers about the content of trans fats in packaged foods. The study investigates the presence of trans fat information in labeling, and the actual use of trans fat in packaged food and beverages marketed in Brazil. Of 11,434 products analyzed, 81.3% omitted listing trans fat sources in food ingredients. The adverse effects of trans fat consumption are well documented (outside of packaging), but industrially produced trans fats are still used in many food products. Along with measures to restrict their use, improvements in nutritional labeling are needed.
