Abstract

This special issue covers contract farming in Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Zambia. A contract farming system (also known as satellite farming, nucleus estates, outgrower schemes), involves a contractual relationship between farmers and a central food processing or exporting unit. However, developing country governments are concerned about foreign ownership of land and the "enclave" nature of plantations, with their weak linkages to the rest of the economy. The papers in this volume were presented at a conference held in Harare, Zimbabwe (1988) attended by academics, policy-makers, investors and project managers.
