Abstract
IDRC is very active in Research for Development (R4D), but the objective of this exercise is to present diverse ideas of R4D programming to IDRC, to demonstrate the diversity of the R4D landscape. Based on a review of a wide variety of initiatives that use different approaches, the paper starts with some general observations on the R4D landscape, and important new developments are highlighted. Six case studies showing different types of initiatives are reviewed, including details of programme design and operation. R4D organisations support a wide range of activities beyond direct support to research activities. Almost all involve capacity-building.
