Abstract
In conducting fieldwork for every research project, a key factor in the success of the research is the cultural negotiation of the researchers themselves. This article highlights the role of research assistants in navigating the spaces of research and in the production of knowledge. The article uses the concept of “triple subjectivity” to explore the relationship between the positions of the researchers, the people they are researching, and the knowledge they are producing. By reflecting on the influences of religion, ethnicity and class, researchers concluded the necessity to remain sensitive to the emotions and anxieties of those they work alongside.
