Abstract
This report describes the ways that men, their partners and family members build nonviolent alternatives, resisting systems, groups and practices that promote violence within the city. 1,151 household surveys were conducted with adult men and women in two sites, along with qualitative interviews, in order to map masculinities, contextualize the survey results, and provide detailed life histories that illuminate quantitative key findings. The research seeks to understand the relationship between exposure to “public” forms of urban violence and forms of violence in “private” spheres such as between intimate partners and among family members. Key findings and recommendations are presented.
