Abstract
This policy brief looks at the prominent role (older) women play in the Community Work Programme (CWP). Focusing on women participants’ involvement in community work and local social networks, it demonstrates their contribution to building social cohesion and driving crime and violence prevention activities through the CWP. The contribution of women, especially older women, to innovation and effectiveness within the CWP needs to be fostered. The brief concludes with recommendations for supporting women’s contributions to the CWP. In 2015 there were 202,599 participants at 186 CWP sites across South Africa: 75% were women; 42% above 35 years of age.
