Abstract
Bihar, being the least urbanized state of India, needs massive investment in urban development. As in most Indian urban centres, the city of Patna, in Bihar, has a congested old section adjacent to which are more carefully planned and spacious sections. Over 90 percent of residential areas are unplanned, with 64 percent of the population of Patna living in areas identified as slums. The study examines public services such as transportation and health facilities; sanitation, where less than 10 percent of the city's population is connected to a sewage network; education; formal and informal employment; and industry, with regard to new urban planning and development initiatives.
