Abstract

Ongoing challenges within various complex types of violence in South Asian urban areas can comprise physical, psychological and structural aspects, in both public and private spaces, and can be related to any combination of caste, gender, race. An important question arises – How to measure violence in a meaningful way? For instance the nature, context and intensity of violence is different in Ahmedabad and Kochi. A robust definition of violence is needed in terms of a framework for dealing with multiple effects in different cities. Ambiguities with regard to the definition, criteria, and boundaries that constitute Urban centres need also to be acknowledged.
