Abstract
What is the relationship between social cohesion and violence? Can social cohesion act as a protective factor against violence in the developing world? This research brief reviews the information that has emerged from a three-year international comparative study in South Africa and Brazil investigating the relationship between violence, social cohesion, inequality and poverty. The project was conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in South Africa and funded under the Safe and Inclusive Cities Progamme of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Canada.
