Abstract

Based on the understanding that growth-empowerment linkages need to be supported by complementary policies, this review demonstrates that knowledge on what works in supporting Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) is growing, but still limited. The review highlights key trends in women's economic empowerment in terms of growth: growing women’s labour force participation, but with large regional differences and continued gender disparities; growing female entrepreneurship, again with large regional differences; slowly emerging knowledge of what holds women back in different contexts; the continued important role of the care economy; and growing knowledge on time use.
