Where caring is sharing : evolving ethical considerations in tuberculosis prevention among healthcare workers

Abstract
The dedication of health care workers (HCWs) to the treatment of tuberculosis exposes them to serious risks. This research advocates for a language of ethics applied to policies that have repercussions on the lives of HCWs in under-resourced settings. An evolved bioethics would include issues such as resource reallocation to alter structural factors that underpin tuberculosis epidemics. The language of ethics can assist responsible parties to properly value contributions of poorly compensated HCWs. It is essential that the work of HCWs be acknowledged – through a commitment to alleviate problematic aspects of the environments in which they operate.
