    Women in engineering education and careers in Benin and Ghana (WEEC-BG) : fact sheet

    The main objective of the project is to contribute to bridging the gender gap in engineering in Ghana and Bénin through original research and policy recommendations. Specifically, the project seeks to provide strong evidence of trends in female participation in engineering education and careers over the past decades, provide insights into the impacts of policies and practices, and identify recommendations for closing the gender gap in engineering and STEM in general. This fact sheet highlights the key findings of the Ghana study.

    Women in engineering education and careers in Benin and Ghana (WEEC-BG) : dissemination workshop

    The purpose of the dissemination workshop was to share the findings of the project to stakeholders for inputs, especially on recommendations. The dissemination workshop brought together relevant public institutions, academia, researchers, students, professional associations and the private sector participants in the field of engineering. The workshop adopted a participatory approach where both participants and project team engaged equally. The project team started presentations on a background of the project; national policy environment for women in engineering education and careers in Ghana; female participation in engineering education and careers: the trends and enablers; barriers to engineering careers; barriers in higher education: teaching and learning; barriers in engineering education in Ghana and presentation of key recommendations. In the breakout session, participants were put into six groups which include, basic and SHS teachers, academia, researchers, other engineering practitioners, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and students. The groups later presented the outcome of their group discussions in a plenary.

    Global efforts to mitigate the spread and impacts of COVID-19 on the health of populations worldwide have diverted health resources, with unintended consequences on global efforts to prevent and control other major infectious diseases, including malaria. This project aimed to understand the impact of COVID-19 measures on the spread of malaria in Benin.

    WiSE insights Africa : beyond the bias & barriers - promoting the desire of women scientists

    This third issue of ‘Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Insights Africa’ shines the spotlight on two exceptional women, a scientist and an engineer in Benin and Ghana, who have excelled in their professional careers over the years. Prof Dr. Sylvie Eliane Ghislaine Hounzangbe Adote is a female scientist from the Republic of Benin. She is an animal scientist and has worked with young scientists to mentor them. The other, Ing. Dr. Inyonam Kpekpena is a classic example of a Ghanaian female engineer who has excelled in engineering, one of the challenging fields of STEM. Dr. Kpekpena is a well recognized Network Engineer and a member of several professional bodies.

    The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) selected eleven projects following a Call for Proposal on ‘Breaking Barriers to Women’s Participation in Science’. The main goal of the IDRC project is to identify and address systemic barriers that inhibit greater participation of women and other underrepresented groups in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The Science and Technology Policy Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-STEPRI) in Ghana, is one of the recipients of the IDRC grant for the project “Women in Engineering Education and Careers in Benin and Ghana (WEEC-BG).” It is important to note that most systemic barriers in women’s participation in STEM exist as a result of institutional values, cultures, policies, and practices that implicitly or explicitly restrict the institutions from successfully attracting, recruiting, retaining, and promoting women scientists and other groups with a minority presence in STEM fields.

    Seeing the role of female scientists and engineers in the national systems of innovation, science and technology, governments and universities in Africa have encouraged and have programmes in place for the increment of the number of females who study science and engineering at the post-secondary level. In Ghana, one such initiative was to lower the entry requirements for female applicants into universities and polytechnics in STEM programmes.

    Women in software companies in Argentina : what do we know and what should we know?

    This article focuses on the labor environment of firms in the Software and Information Technology industry sector (SIS) in Argentina, specifically the participation of women in this sector. Based on the verification of the low participation of women in this type of activities at a global and local level, this text offers a literature review on the possible barriers faced by women who work in IT (briefly, activities related to software production) in these firms. Specifically, we systematize the existence of barriers in four dimensions: i. Recruitment; ii. Evaluation; iii. Promotion, and iv. Work dynamics. The main findings are related to barriers at the level of practices in these firms, in terms of the circulation of stereotypes but also in working, spatial and organizational conditions. In turn, we identified a relevant lack of literary coverage on the rules that govern these firms in each analytical dimension.

    Gendered Design in STEAM for Lower-and-Middle-Income-Countries is a three year program (2019-2022) facilitated by Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Starting in 2019, the Gendered Design in STEAM (GDS) project has been investigating and advancing gendered design through 20 IDRC-awarded grants across the global south. The 20 selected research teams come from Africa, Asia & Latin America. The teams work in a variety of fields that practice design processes, but they share a common goal: to identify and overcome gender bias and tackle issues especially affecting women in lower-and-middle-income countries. This project website contains information on the project and a resource library containing project outputs.

    Supporting research on gender and design amongst STEAM researchers in the souths : a case study of subsumption in design methods

    This paper tells the story of a research program that subsumed the approaches of design, arts and social sciences to enhance gender aware and inclusive research amongst twenty academic teams of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics located in the Souths. These are the findings of our empirical exploration to support the emergence of a transdisciplinary area of research and practice which we defined as Gendered Design. The key factors that proved crucial to overcome disciplinary boundaries and catalyse processes of empowerment are: theoretical and methodological openness, design-driven strategy, and experimentation, as well as a holistic and affective approach to collaborations and relationships.

The feature article is an overview of who they are.
