Abstract

The study investigated the state of health education and its impact on the control of diseases and the quality of health in Iguli parish in Lira district. More specifically an assessment was made of the extent to which health education is provided to the community and two primary schools in this parish, the methods employed, the impact of health education on the control of diseases and the quality of health and finally the extent to which the status of health in the parish can be explained by the level of health education in the parish. The research employed relevant techniques of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) ; Personal Interview methods and observation. The major hypothesis of the study was that the prevalence of preventable disease in Iguli parish is to a large extent caused by inadequate health education provided. The study found out that health education is provided to a limited extent to the community and to some good extent in the primary schools in the parish. Whereas in the community, health education was found to be irregular and the methods inadequate due to organisational and resource constraints, in the primary schools health education was found to be integrated in the syllabus and therefore regular. The major problem of providing health education in schools, however, was found to be inadequate demonstration kits. Another important finding of the study was that although the prevalence of preventable diseases and poor health in the study area can to a large extent be explained by inadequate health education provided, low income and poverty was found to significantly influence the prevalence of preventable diseases and poor health by constraining the implementation of practices that promote good health.
