Abstract

PAPR research works to reduce the mistrust and research fatigue that exists within academia and communities, and to maximize delivery of equitable economic benefits of research. The Protected Areas and Poverty Reduction Canada-Africa Research and Learning Alliance seeks to address the challenges of reducing rural poverty and ensuring environmental sustainability through a focus on rural communities and adjacent protected areas in Ghana, Tanzania and Canada. Key amongst challenges is gaining the trust of local communities, often by working through traditional authorities and local leaders who hold the trust of their people, while others in these communities serve and gain experience as research assistants.
