Abstract
Systems thinking provides new opportunities to test and revise our understanding of the nature of things, including how to intervene to improve people’s health. Adding to theories, methods and tools we otherwise use in global health, it has a wide variety of applications and goals. For instance, systems dynamics models have been used to examine neonatal mortality in Uganda. Network mapping, social network analyses, and process mapping can illustrate and analyze connections between people and organizations. The article discusses which of these tools might be most useful for different types of inquiry, involving both qualitative and quantitative techniques of research.
