Abstract

The crowdsourcing approach to data collection enables very localized and relevant information to be collected and disseminated. Using Kenya’s 2013 general elections as a case study, the project looks at commonly held assumptions that crowdsourced information captures more information regarding on-the-ground reality than traditional media outlets. The project investigates and identifies factors that influence the viability, verification, and validity of crowdsourcing during elections. Drawing from the findings, a draft framework designed to help prospective crowdsourcers assess the viability of a crowdsourcing project during an election has been created.
