Genetic hemoglobin disorders and anemia in Cambodian women of reproductive age

Abstract

This poster provides a summary of the project and its results. Anemia is common in Cambodian women of reproductive age. The aim was to examine associations between anemia and genetic Hb disorders, to investigate the biochemical correlates, and to estimate the proportion of anemia associated with iron deficiency. Findings show low prevalence of B12; folate and vitamin A deficiency was very low. Anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were surprisingly low in women with no genetic Hb disorders. Hb disorders should not be ignored and simple, low cost genetic Hb screening tests are needed.
