Abstract

A number of factors are responsible for the steep decline in the production, consumption and development of small millets: reduction of area under cultivation mainly due to low productivity, high labour intensity and drudgery of agricultural operations; lack of attractive farm gate prices; and availability and subsidization of rice and wheat in the public distribution system. Dehusking is a tedious and time consuming operation undertaken by already over-worked women and an important reason for reduction of consumption. Centrifugal dehuller prototypes have been developed. Relevant agricultural innovations and postharvest technologies are being tested.
