Abstract
Findings showed market-based barriers to technology adoption by farmers: notably, weak access to both markets and financing. Demographic characteristics are also predictive: women and more educated farmers are more likely to adopt new technologies. Results suggest policy-makers could better target groups of farmers by allowing natural leaders to discuss the information with others where it can become absorbed by social networks. There is evidence that innovative technologies can be particularly effective if targeted to women. The project aimed to improve food security through reintroduction of healthy food crops into local production, as well as innovations in irrigation and water management.
