Abstract

The presentation advocates for the Caboclo people of the Amazon Estuary: they should not be defined as “climate change or environmental victims,” but as people adept at adaptation of socio-ecological systems (SES) in response to challenges and opportunities of climate changes. Expert Caboclo are building resilience to external shocks into their SESs, with emphasis on ecological resilience to lancantes (extreme floods) through modification of land use, maintaining vegetation that reduces erosion while creating a refuge for fish-shrimp during rise in the river currents.
