Abstract
Prior to this study there was no concrete evidence that leaves from a few local tree species and shrubs, available throughout the year, could be used to feed sheep and even replace the time-tested feed of groundnut haulm. Sheep fattening experiments conducted in four villages gave women involved in sheep rearing a first-hand look at the effect of using rations that included tree fodder. The fattened sheep were sold following the first experiments and provided women farmers with the means to purchase 30 rams. These initiatives can be implemented on a large scale and directed primarily at women to increase income and expertise.
