Abstract

Risks and benefits of ecotourism in Nepal need to be assessed and agreed upon before activities, including community-based tourism activities are introduced. Overdependence on tourism at the village level could enhance vulnerability relative to the volatility of global travel businesses. This policy brief reports on the effects of some community initiatives. A recent innovation in this sector is the development of community lodges along trekking trails. Community lodges provide a strategy for areas that have tourism potential that could help provide new opportunities for local livelihoods.
