Abstract
The paper emphasizes “striving for excellence” and aims to illustrate key indicators of research excellence in collaborative research, with specific reference to North–South partnerships, as well as for South–South collaborative research. The paper provides a definition of fundamental criteria of research excellence in relation to the parameters of North-South collaboration; three modes of research effectiveness derived from three research projects, and a review of some difficulties and challenges. All three of the projects incorporated an ethos of social inclusion and democratic practice, and included youth participants.
