Abstract
This report covers implications of rapid urbanization and climate change on water availability for vulnerable communities in four South Asian cities. Affected communities are often aware of their vulnerabilities, but this is not reflected in the planning process, although their engagement is critical for planned adaptation. Cities grow in numbers and expand physically by acquiring land from the peripheral rural areas, making peri-urban areas susceptible to related effects of climate change. Built-up surfaces of cities increase runoff of rainwater and decrease recharge of groundwater during spells of short and intense rainfall periods; evapo-transpiration increases and groundwater exploitation becomes encouraged.
