Abstract

The paper focuses on service innovation in the cultural industries in Jamaica, including marketing innovations. Jamaica is a good example of the potential of cultural industries that can generate economic value. However, given high-profile international positioning, the economic returns from cultural products fall far short of expectations. The study draws attention to the absence of a supporting legal framework, including absence of intellectual property rights (IPR), and the deleterious impacts on appropriation of value. Jamaica is known for its music and outstanding international music icons (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh) for instance, yet has no dedicated performing space anywhere on the island.
