Abstract

The book details changes in national defence systems and state sovereignty in Africa along with the rise of private security companies. Finding the correct balance between full-time military professionals and civilian specialists, reservists and contractors is imperative. While the private sector has drained national armed forces, the latter are also now in a position to gain from the experience of civilian military operators in military operations. The growth and influence of Private Military/Security Companies (PMSCs) is fundamentally changing the face of the military profession, as well as the future governance of public security.
