Abstract
The book focuses on the proliferation of private military and security companies (PMSC) in peacekeeping operations on the African continent. A key question is how these companies have within a short space of time made the transition from operators in the ‘market for force’ to operators in the ‘market for peace.’ A number of policy options are presented by the five contributing authors. Chief among these policy needs are regulation, oversight and monitoring of PMSCs at all levels. The United Nations Working Group on the use of mercenaries has repeatedly expressed concern about the impact of PMSCs on human rights, particularly in unregulated contexts.
