Abstract
This paper presents the profile of overweight-obesity (O-O) in the Indian health and development context by describing the burden of disease with respect to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to which O-O is an important contributor. It profiles current programmes and policy responses in health and other sectors and discusses how policy can be catalyzed to pay greater attention to O-O prevention. Dedicated efforts to reorient healthcare systems to focus on prevention and policy changes must address the social determinants of O-O and NCDs.
