Abstract
This article describes the initiatives developed by Brazilian government agencies to prevent and control overweight and obesity in the country, which is recognized as a social problem and one of the faces of food and nutritional insecurity. Success of programmes will depend on a governance model that promotes joint and integrated initiatives by different sectors, and active participation by civil society.
