Abstract

The notion of development, beyond economic growth, also encompasses the transformation of existing economic and social structures. This transformation requires the active participation of at least a dynamic minority. Analysis should move beyond both the "traditional" (neo)institutional school of economics to include an approach that allows for a greater role for individuals and communities, as well as the entrepreneurial sector. Five case studies, taken from different Asian economies and different academic disciplines (economics, political science, public policy, sociology, and anthropology), present different perspectives on the relationship between entrepreneurship and development.
