Abstract:
The economics of energy is gradually forcing profit-making enterprises out of fossil fuels. Easily accessible coal has already been mined and meanwhile, the costs of renewable energy sources have decreased by 25%. This article in the Cape Times (2013) newspaper argues for a move towards solar power, as well as a re-think of “pro-poor” tariffs, especially in relation to service provision for the “backyard dweller” populations who account for 672,000 South African households.
