Abstract

The report describes an extraordinary turning point for a community decimated by HIV/AIDS and economic “structural adjustment.” Changes in domestic and lineage organization connected with and/or rooted in changes in gender relations were a major contributing factor of success. The revolution was facilitated by the extent of the crisis and withdrawal of the dominant discourse associated with the state and modernization, so that farmers could make new choices. Research findings fed into community debates about how they lived, how they might change how they lived, and how they should be represented through the research to the outside world.
