Abstract

The book examines what is required for the convergence of African economies and looks at some instruments that could enhance poverty-reduction strategies. It addresses how to ensure that regional integration is designed and led in such a way as to generate benefits for people. These gains of integration require certain conditions that are identified in the book. The West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) Commission supported publication of this reference book on regional integration in West Africa. WAEMU was founded in 1994 to promote the economic and monetary integration of eight West African countries sharing a single currency.
