Abstract
The paper reports on seasonal and inter-annual variability of the surface circulation of the Cape Verde region. Findings show that the main cause of variability is the seasonal signal of the northeast Tropical Atlantic large-scale surface circulation, especially in its southernmost part, which also affects the flow field along the African Coast and the Guinea Dome. Satellite mapping reveals that, concerning the surface ocean currents, the monthly variation has two distinct regional patterns. Satellite derived datasets are very useful for studying the hydrodynamics of regions that lack in situ observation.
