Abstract

Pipe distribution networks in the developing world are constantly vulnerable to breaks and cracks, leading to contamination of treated water. Effective sanitation, adequate water supply, hygiene promotion, and safe drinking water quality at its point of consumption, are integral and necessary for protecting public health from a pandemic of preventable diarrhoeal diseases. Surveys were first conducted for a disease monitoring program, then technological design for engineering in international development contexts was undertaken. Alternative water treatment systems became the project focus, as water quality is primary for a safe water system when reliable connections to centrally treated water are unavailable.
